Reimburse self for expenses from managing mom's interests

Dear Bruce: Should I be paying myself from my mother's money that I manage? Since moving back to Florida nine years ago, I have had increasing responsibilities for my 92-year-old mother, who lives 60 miles away. I have sold her house, car and moved her twice. I have gotten her an increase in her veteran's benefits. I put her money in CDs at a much higher interest rate than she was getting from her bank. For the past four years, I have had power of attorney. She was diagnosed with slow progressing Alzheimer's and has been staying in an assisted-living facility. I go there every two weeks and take her to all appointments. I manage her affairs and more.

My sister makes one trip here a year from another state, stays at our home and spends a few hours with mother, yet she is listed as executrix in mother's will.

Police close in on Parnell killer

Homicide detectives believe they are closing in on the killer of Reece John Shadbolt who was stabbed to death in his Auckland flat on Waitangi Day.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Beard said today the person who alerted police to the incident had provided information and probably knew the identity of the killer.

The caller rang police on Waitangi Day to say there had there had been a fight in a Parnell flat in which a man was injured.

Police went to the flat and found the body of Mr Shadbolt.

A post mortem yesterday revealed he had been stabbed several times.

Mr Beard said the caller had given police a strong line of inquiry.

Mr Shadbolt, 38, a print and production studio manager, had been living alone in the apartment for less than a week.

Kenya: Widespread Underage Sex Condemned

A cross section of religious leaders and reproductive health experts reacted sharply to the explosive report unveiling moral decadence.

But the experts seemed to suggest that both parents and churches were to blame, since they had abdicated their roles.

Should I have a living will?

Many people believe they can exercise better control over their own destiny by filling out a living will (also called an advance directive.) They may have concerns about becoming caught in a tangle of tubes, wires and technology as they are dying, unable to break free and extricate themselves. They hope that by signing on the dotted line, they may be able to breathe their last easily and peacefully.

At first glance, an advance directive may appear to address many of our end-of-life concerns, and hence, can seem like a good idea. However, it often tends to serve as a rather blunt instrument when it comes to handling complex and nuanced end-of-life situations. Moreover, living wills are sometimes used to buttress or justify some of the morally problematic decisions being made in health care settings today.
