Summit Park residents spend time volunteering at assisted living ...

Olin Library will be receiving a new kind of archive by the end of this school year, courtesy of a group of students living in Drury's Summit Park Leadership Community.

"We are videotaping the residents of Joy Assisted Living about growing up in the Great Depression, their experiences with the wars and their life stories," said participating student Jessica Lacy. Joy Assisted Living, located in west Springfield, and is home to more than 50 residents, all of whom are mobile and need little supervision.

"We will then compile all of those tapes into a DVD that will be given to their families and the library and that could be used by students as a primary source in their research," said Lacy.

Rick Jakeman, director of the Leadership and Volunteer Development program at Drury, hopes that these DVDs will become precious heirlooms for the families of the Joy Assisted Living residents.
